Do PSA Slabs Scratch? Causes & How to Prevent It
Yes — PSA slabs absolutely scratch. The outer shell is a clear polymer (similar to acrylic) and it picks up hairline marks from almost any abrasive contact: shelving, other slabs, fabric, even microfiber cloths used incorrectly. Scratches on a PSA holder don't change the grade of the card inside, but they significantly hurt the visual appeal, resale value, and the case itself can become a distraction when you display it.
Why PSA slabs scratch so easily
- The shell is a soft polymer — durable against impact, less durable against abrasion.
- The high-gloss finish that makes a fresh slab look so good is also what shows every micro-scratch.
- Two slabs sliding against each other are the single most common cause of damage.
How to prevent scratches
- Use a hard-shell protector. A SlabGuard or equivalent case takes 99% of the abrasion risk off the slab itself.
- Never stack bare slabs. If you must stack, put a soft cloth or paper between each one.
- Handle by the edges. Skin oil dulls the gloss over time.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners. No paper towels, no glass cleaner with ammonia, no household polish.
- Transport in a padded case. Loose slabs in a backpack will scratch each other in minutes.
How to clean a PSA slab safely
For dust and fingerprints, use a clean microfiber cloth with no debris on it (rinse it regularly) and wipe in straight lines, not circles. For more stubborn marks, a tiny amount of distilled water on the microfiber works. Never use solvents, plastic polishes, or rubbing compounds on a graded slab — you can dull the shell permanently.
The simplest fix
A hard-shell case is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a graded card. The slab does the heavy lifting of protecting the card; the protector does the heavy lifting of protecting the slab.
